The story of Ferrari 512
We’re in 1970, Enzo Ferrari decided to participate at world brands in the “Group 5”, and even with help of FIAT can achieve in record time the Ferrari 512 s (sport), producing at least 25 cars, as provided for by regulation. These are the characteristics of the car: 12-cylinder engine, 4,993 .53 displacement cm³, banks 60° angle, with a capacity of 550 HP at 8,500 rpm, weight: 850 kg. Five cars were sent to Daytona for the 24 hours, which would have as big an opponent the Porsche 917. The other 11 were enrolled in the 24 hours of Le Mans. The bodywork modified by introducing a “long tail”, designed for the great speed of the straights of Le Mans. The car, proven on the Turin-Piacenza motorway that FIAT used for their tests, at the time not yet open to traffic, touched the 345 km/h. At the 6 hours of Watkins Glen the 512 was taken with an engine boosted to 600 HP, lightened bodywork and opened on the upper side. It was a car with great potential, but that gave variable results, that the pilots attributed to insufficient competitiveness of the car. So at the end of 1970, Enzo Ferrari asked to the Monza driver Tino Brambilla to try the car at the Modena circuit. After trying the car he came to Ferrari and said “want to say the truth or tell you balls?” and had the consent of Ferrari, continued, “…look, if here on steering wheel puts a lever this car becomes a suburban train». Enzo Ferrari immediately began developing a new version of the car, the 512 M (modified), which at the end of the season, was further amended, introducing the “coda tronca”, (Porsche 917 k-inspired), and most decided forms, with an output of 610 HP at 9000 rpm, weighing 815 kg, but reserved only to private teams. With 1972 season, Ferrari 512 development halted following the introduction of a new regulation, which reduced the power from 5000 cc. to 3000. From 512 was born an interesting development in design experimentation, with the creation of a concept car signed Pininfarina, the Ferrari Modulo.
