Isotta Fraschini…., da Lima a Milano con passione / Isotta Fraschini…., from Lima to Milano with passion

L’auto sembrava appena uscita dalle officine IF.

Isotta Fraschini...., from Lima to Milano with passion

Isotta Fraschini, is probably the best car maker has created a myth around its image, both for its own history, which for the fantastic style of its car.
The Società Milanese Automobili Isotta Fraschini & C was founded on January 27, 1900 by Cesare Isotta Fraschini, the three brothers, Riccardo Bencetti, Paolo Meda and Louis Prinetti.
The lawyer Isotta and Vincenzo Fraschini were also pilots, while Oreste Fraschini was always passionate about cars. Had purchased one of the first Benz imported in Italy, by Giuseppe Ricordi (importer of cars and the second son of Tino Ricordi, founder of the Milanese record label).
The name Isotta Fraschini began to increase its fame when in 1908, a IF set a land speed record in the United States with the average of 105 km/h. Since 1911 the Isotta Fraschini engines were also mounted on planes and airships.
It was in 1919, in the midst of the post-war crisis, thanks to the arrival of count Lodovico Mazzotti, was made the Type 8. The first car, with 8 cylinders engine series produced in the world, destined to wealthy clients, which to this day remains arguably one of the highest peaks reached by a car in expression of style and elegance. The price was very high at the time, about 150,000 lire (to buy only the chassis and engine).
The car, as well as in Italy, was sold mainly in the United States and in South America, especially in Argentina and Brazil.
The IF were bought by celebrities like Gabriele D’Annunzio, Rudolph Valentino, Benito Mussolini, Umberto di Savoia. A Type 8 also appeared in the famous Billy Wilder movie of 1950, Sunset boulevard.
Oreste Fraschini’s death, his brothers and the lawyer Cesare Isotta left the company, which then passed into the hands of count Mazzotti (President) and Cattaneo (CEO).
Following the great depression of 1929, Henry Ford tried to buy the company that was in great difficulty. Agnelli, however, pressured because defensive measures were taken by the State, in respect of the FIAT group, which was promulgated the law Gazzera, which effectively prevented Ford to complete their projects.
After the war was made a new eight-cylinder model, called 8 c Monterosa, but times and fashions had changed; in 1948 the factory was liquidated.

We arrive at 1975, Edward Magnone (current Chairman of FIAT Registry), which at the time was in Central America through a friend discovered accidentally at a used car dealer in Lima a Isotta Fraschini.
It was a type of Torpedo 8 1923 with 341 number of engine and chassis. Decided to buy it immediately.
The car was running and was used daily by the owner. He was in perfect conditions, as some mechanical parts were replaced with other parts. Was probably owned by a wealthy Argentine or Brazilian, who once bought the engine and the frame in the factory IF it was made to produce a body out from the well-known series Body Castagna in Milan. The car, with a good chance was then sold to a wealthy Peruvian coffee farmer (traces of coffee beans have been found inside at the time of discovery), which felt good for work reasons, to transform it into a pickup truck.
It took 10 years to be able to bring the Torpedo 8 type in Europe, where it was then delivered to the famous Restorer of chassis and engines, A. Archer of Essex (London).
In 1989, after three years of work, the restoration of engine and chassis had been completed. Non-original parts were rebuilt by hand one by one, with amazing work. The car seemed to just exit workshops IF.
At this point the car was bought by Silvano Cima (avid collector known important milanese vintage cars), which thanks to its extensive knowledge in the field, after two years he managed to find an automobile junkyard in the countryside between Liguria and Lombardy, a body of type 8 Torpedo sport Castagna, who perfectly fit on the frame of found Isotta.
Now comes the hardest part, because nobody accepted the onerous task of restoring a car so sophisticated, not only for the body but also for the delicate inlaid wooden Interior and ivory.
It was in 1999, after 10 years of research, that Fabio Calligaris, owner of the Atelier Fuoriserie accepted the challenge.
The shell very deteriorated, it was rebuilt exactly as the original by an expert “scoccaio”, Ivano Raniero of Milano. The wooden internal parts, were entrusted to the expert hands of cabinet-maker ferrarese Maurizio Martinucci.
The work lasted seven months, in which following original designs were scrupulously reproduced inlays, with the inclusion of lastrature and other fine woods such as ebony, rose, etc. .., (only the ivory, now illegal, was replaced with other types of wood). All interiors were then polished with the old shellac system applied to buffer.
It took 8 years, but at the end of 2007, the work was finally completed.
After 84 years, thanks to the great willpower and passion of Silvano Cima and many scrupulous and expert craftsmen, renovators a Isotta Fraschini tipo 8, carrozzeria Castagna Sport of 1923, was reborn!
The Isotta Fraschini and in particular the Type 8, are unanimously considered cars worldwide, the equivalent of art. Their design and sophisticated build quality has reached the time levels of elegance and style and unattainable today is no longer reproducible. Today in the world there are few examples, all pieces unique and rare ones in good condition. This is undoubtedly the most beautiful specimen in the world shows the splendour of that time.
This car has become very popular because it has been exposed for 6 months in the Italy Pavilion at Expo Shanghai 2010, alongside a Ferrari, which symbols of the excellence of made in Italy. In addition, since its restoration, he has participated in numerous competitions of elegance, in Italy and in the world, winning as it is logical to expect, only first prizes.
